Tampines Secondary School – Pilot Project for Sustainable School Campuses
The best practices on the implementable pathways to design and transform existing low to mid-rise institutional buildings in Singapore.
Since 2016, BCA have worked with MOE, involving both local researchers and industry experts, to research ways to transform existing schools into sustainable campuses with high energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption. In 2018, Tampines Secondary School (TPSS) was selected as a pilot testbed.
The project team had worked within the constraints of an existing institutional building to maximise the use of naturally ventilated spaces, where practical, to reduce the overall energy consumption.
Through close collaboration among the project team and industry stakeholders, TPSS was able to achieve the following tangible and Intangible benefits.
a. Annual Energy surplus of > 25% under full occupancy condition,
b. 32% improvement in Occupant’s thermal comfort
c. 2 dBA reduction in Noise level
More importantly, the testbed at TPSS was able to impart awareness and knowledge to our future generations in the fight to mitigate effects of climate change.
